In 2018 I invited Jean Borbridge to be artist-in-residence at The Sunroom Artspace, and worked with her to develop a workshop that responded to the exhibition Play-Selves. The Playful-Self Workshop was presented as part of the opening night of Play-Selves, in conjunction with a First Fridays in the Exchange — when each first Friday of the month, all the artspaces in the Winnipeg’s Exchange District keep their doors open and their spaces activated into the night. The Sunroom stayed lit by sunlight because in the height of Winnipeg summer, the sun sets at approx 11pm.

The Playful-Self

In conjunction with The Sunroom’s exhibition ‘Play-Selves,’ our current artist-in-residence, Jean Borbridge will be facilitating a workshop on alternative modes of self portraiture. Blind contour drawing, writing prompts, paper and sound collage and improvised exercises will aid the participants in self exploration within a low-stakes, play-driven environment.

Jean Borbridge is an interdisciplinary artist based out of Winnipeg Manitoba, where she received her Bachelor of Fine Arts Honours at the University of Manitoba. She works with a variety of media, with a focus on painting, photography and performance. Her recent body of work uses humour and satire to undermine idealized narratives of the self in relation to the female body. Using sensibilities found in painting and collage to break down her images, she then re-photographs them – subverting the representation of the ubiquitous female form. She has exhibited her work and curated shows in a number of alternative spaces around Winnipeg. She has also exhibited at the Winnipeg Art Gallery and the national historic site The Forks. Jean is currently the assistant manager of Studio 393, a drop-in center for dance art and music for youth.
